day 2: zhongzi dim sum doll

this is the first in a series of plush toys that i want to make as presents for my nieces and nephew. this is zhongzi, which is stuffed glutinous rice wrapped in a bamboo leaf. i sewed everything entirely by machine (including the eyes and mouth) and sewed a running stitch along the outside seam, not wrong side out, then flip inside out like i normally do. this is because i am lazy, but i think it works ok (maybe a little messy):

i'd also like to make turnip cake, shu mai, mantou, and egg custard at some point.

awwww....zhongzi is extremely cute. and i like the external seams, looks good that way. what did you use for stuffing? i was just thinking it would be fun to use beans or rice to fill the foods, so you could use them as juggling balls. can't wait to see more of them!

thanks yall :) i was just filling them with polyfill stuffing, but i like the rice/beans idea a lot... i think they would stuff better that way too, more substantial. to sew the eyes/mouth, i just used a zig zag stitch with width 1/length 0-1 for the eyes and width 6.5/a little more than 0 for the mouth. i was trying to keep the mouth looser so that it could be pushed into a smiley face a little...

i'm excited to be doing tad for the 4th year in a row! i don't have any grand plans or a theme planned this year but want to try making a variety of things, similar to projects i have done in the past: plush toys, refashioned garments, sculpey figurines, photography, drawings and illustrations, and other miscellaneous things i've been meaning to do/wanting to try.
